Multiple "Safe Places"

A little advanced preparation can prevent a bad situation from becoming a really bad situation. One such situation to prepare for is having one or more of the following lost or stolen: your bike, your luggage, your jacket, your wallet, your keys, or your prescription glasses (if you have 'em).

Prepare by having two or more "safe places" in your bike, luggage, jacket, money belt, boot, wallet, or pocket where you store extra cash, traveller's cheques, credit cards, lists of numbers (phone, credit card, etc), prescription glasses, and/or keys. You could have another rider hold these for you but have a plan in case you get separated.

KOA Campgrounds

KOA (info) is an international chain of campgrounds. Each is inspected regularily to ensure quality. I love KOAs for their hot showers alone.

I also love KOAs for their map book. Bring one on your trip. Then at around 3-6:00pm, take a look at the map, figure out where you'll be when you want to stop, find the nearest KOA, call their toll free number (each campground has its own) to reserve a camp site, then arrive knowing you won't get turned away (which can happen on busy weekends, near populated areas, or when they see you arrive on a motorcycle).
